Types of workouts for beginners and overweight people

If you’re overweight and starting (or restarting) exercise, the key goals are low joint stress, steady progression, and consistency. Here are the main types of workouts that are safe and effective:

1) Low-Impact Cardio (Best Starting Point)

Great for burning calories without stressing knees, hips, or ankles.

  • ๐Ÿšถ Brisk walking (treadmill or outdoors)
  • ๐Ÿšด Stationary cycling
  • ๐ŸŠ Swimming
  • ๐Ÿ’ง Water aerobics
  • ๐Ÿšฃ Rowing machine
  • ๐Ÿฅพ Elliptical trainer

Why itโ€™s good: Improves heart health and helps with fat loss while protecting joints.

Start with: 20โ€“30 minutes, 3โ€“5 times per week.

2) Strength Training (Very Important)

Building muscle boosts metabolism and improves long-term fat loss.

Beginner-Friendly Options:

  • Bodyweight exercises (wall push-ups, chair squats)
  • Resistance bands
  • Light dumbbells
  • Machines at the gym (more controlled movement)

Example Exercises:

  • Squats (or sit-to-stand)
  • Wall or incline push-ups
  • Seated rows
  • Glute bridges
  • Step-ups (low step)

Start with: 2โ€“3 days per week, full-body routine.

3) Water-Based Workouts (Easiest on Joints)

If you have knee or back pain, this is excellent.

  • Swimming laps
  • Aqua jogging
  • Water aerobics classes

Water reduces body weight impact by up to 90%.

4) Flexibility & Mobility

Often overlooked but very helpful.

  • Gentle stretching
  • Beginner yoga
  • Tai Chi
  • Mobility drills

These improve balance and reduce injury risk.

5) Low-Impact HIIT (After Building Base Fitness)

Once youโ€™re comfortable exercising:

  • Short intervals on bike or elliptical
  • Circuit training with light weights
  • Low-impact step intervals

Avoid jumping exercises early on.

Simple Weekly Plan Example

Day 1: 30 min walking + light strength
Day 2: Rest or stretching
Day 3: Cycling or swimming
Day 4: Strength training
Day 5: Walking
Weekend: Light activity (hike, swim, active hobby)

Important Tips

  • Start slower than you think you should
  • Focus on consistency, not intensity
  • Wear supportive shoes
  • If you have medical conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, joint issues), check with a doctor first
  • Progress gradually (increase time before increasing intensity)

Until next time: Don’t give up on your dreams!
